Verge Fusee Almost Defeated Me - King George III era Antique Watch Restoration
In this video, I’m working on something a little bit different. I will be repairing a verge fusee pocket watch in a sterling silver case. Fusee’s are scary as hell to work on, and I’ll show you why. I’ll also try to explain what a verge fusee is, and how it’s supposed to work. This watch was produced in the late 1700's, by far the oldest one I've worked on so far. King George III was still the king of Great Britain, where they were in the upswing of the industrial revolution. American had won its independence only 11 years ago. The French revolution was well underway.

Rare Soviet Poljot Vintage Alarm Watch Restored Inside and Out
Просмотров 84 тыс.Месяц назад
Today, I’m restoring a Soviet era alarm watch I picked up on eBay. The watch isn't running at all and the case is in rough shape. I intend to fully service the movement and restore the case by reshaping and replating it. I also demonstrate how this mechanical alarm watch works, and touch on a bit of the rich history of the Poljot brand of the First Moscow Watch Factory that was founded under or...
Tobacco and Timekeeping Collide! FULL SERVICE of the Heuer Autavia Viceroy

This vintage Heuer Autavia Viceroy was sent in by a viewer who has owned it since its purchase in 1978. This watch does have a service history. However, upon return from the shop the watch would no longer run consistently. The chronograph stops the watch within a minute or so, but even with the chronograph disabled, the power reserve of the watch isn’t acceptable. Such symptoms could have any n...
GOLIATH Sized Devastation: Quarter Repeater with NO Spare Parts

There were several broken and missing parts, none of which I could buy replacements for (including a wheel with missing teeth!). I didn't know it when starting out, but this eventually became THE most complex and challenging restor...

Restoration of a Waltham Vanguard Railroad Grade Pocket Watch - Family Heirloom

    This might be a dumb question but since you are so close to precise at 3 minutes a day, would adjusting the fast/slow feature on the watch improve its accuracy or is it impossible to make a difference?

    • @csspinner
      @csspinner 2 дня назад

      It’s a great question. For a watch of this type of escapement, there’s so much mechanical play and friction that micro adjustments to the hairspring (using the regulator) won’t really dial it in much from there. Some days it’s 3 minutes fast, other days it’s nearly dead on. Sometimes slightly slow. So it varies pretty widely within that +/-. Playing with the regulator would simply just shift that same width of inaccuracy faster or slower in the timekeeping. Hope that made sense.

    I remember the first time I tried fixing a repeater. No instructions, no tutorials, for some reason I was just not able to find them at the time. I was able to figure out how things worked and eventually (with enough literal blood, sweet and tears) I got the watch fixed and resorted, it was a 1920s student watch practice that keep jamming. One tip I learned is you should never guarantee work on a repeater like this, all the little adjustable components tend to drift over time and you will need to break into it again. Also nice job in the teeth. I always found wheel cutting to be the most difficult part of watchmaking, and I am looking for better alternatives.

    If the crystal popped out(I dropped the crystal and ring) how do you get it back in? It’s glass so I don’t want to try popping it in. I was thinking about heating the ring in some very hot water to expand the ring then placing the crystal into the space and letting it cool and shrink down. Is that a thing? Thermodynamically it makes sense but I’m not sure of the process.

    • @csspinner
      @csspinner 3 дня назад

      Yes if the crystal is a tight fit, don’t force it or the rim may chip. The slot in the bezel is angled outward so the actual opening is smaller than where the crystal sits. I’ve had a lot of success heating the bezel to a high enough temperature so that it expands, allowing the crystal to drop right in. As it cools, it secures it in place

    • @JoeKrol
      @JoeKrol 2 дня назад
